Jessica asked me “What would I tell my younger self?” and I have spent quite a bit of time thinking about this. There are so many things I wish I had known about life that I could go back and tell my younger self. With that in mind it is also important to remember that life is all about living and learning and I don’t regret anything I have done in my life. All my mistakes, missteps, successes and failures have led me to who I am today, and honestly I like me! However, if I had the chance I would go back and tell myself the following things…
Don’t spend your time always waiting for what’s next. Enjoy the season of your life that you’re in because you’re only young once. When you are older you will wish that you could go back and re-live all the great times of your youth, so enjoy it while you can!
Take the time to really get to know your grandparents because, sadly, they won’t be here forever. It truly is a gift to really know your grandparents, they know your family like no one else and you will be so thankful to have their stories and memories with you for a lifetime.
Don’t get caught up in trying to keep up with everyone else. There are always going to be people who are smarter, prettier, richer, etc. but there is only one YOU so be proud of that. In the words of the great Dr. Seuss, “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You”.
Don’t be afraid to take chances, put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to fail. It took me a long time to learn this one and maybe I’m still learning it! It’s ok to fail, you learn so much from it, often times even more than if you were to succeed. We all have to fail at times to appreciate our success.
Lastly, always believe in yourself. This is so hard to do sometimes but don’t lose faith in who you are and what you stand for. You will come across all sorts of people in life who will challenge you – embrace that and learn from it. When you are starting to doubt yourself turn to the people who believe in you for strength – whether you know it or not there are always people there to support you (parents, siblings, teachers, counselors, friends, etc.).
My hope is that you take these things and build on them. Enjoy your life and just be YOU, that’s enough!
